Role and Facility Information
Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) is seeking a full time Orthopedic Spine Surgeon with an adult spine subspecialty. The successful candidate must also be comfortable with general orthopedics as they will participate in the general orthopedic call roster (1:8 or 1:9), covering for adult and pediatric patient populations.
This person will join a group of 8 full-time orthopedic surgeons, including one orthopedic spine surgeon, and others covering most other orthopedic subspecialties. The Operating Room is equipped with a Spinal Navigation System (including Ziehm intra-op 3D imaging). Training and experience with MIS techniques would be an asset, but not a requirement.
SMH is a tertiary teaching Hospital and Level III trauma center with a very busy Emergency Department. It is affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC) Department of Orthopedics.
The successful applicant will:
• perform spine and general orthopedic surgery
• participate in the SMH general orthopedic on-call schedule
• have an elective practice that is 100% spine, including C-T-L spine pathologies
• demonstrate excellent knowledge, judgement, and technical competence in providing spinal and general orthopedic care
• have exemplary communication and interpersonal skills with colleagues, allied health care staff, and patients
• work collaboratively within the hospital environment
• participate in the clinical teaching of medical students and Family Medicine Residents
• apply for a Clinical Faculty appointment at UBC

To be considered, applicants must be eligible for a full license with the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons and for coverage by the CMPA. They must also be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Orthopedics and have completed a Fellowship in Adult Spine Surgery.

Surrey Memorial Hospital is a 610 acute care bed, University of BC Affiliated, regional referral and community teaching hospital that has the busiest emergency in the province. The hospital offers medical, surgical, neonatal intensive care, tertiary, ambulatory, cardiology, rehab, as well as 24/7 emergency services with 171,549 visits annually. The Emergency Department includes a dedicated Pediatric treatment and waiting area, part of the state-of the art Critical Care Tower includes a dedicated perinatal centre, helipad and expanded ICU.
