Subspecialty Administration

Role and Facility Information

The Physician Lead is the liaison between the SWC physicians and the senior leadership team within Student Wellness. In addition to the responsibilities of a Physician, the Physician Lead provides clinical supervision and consultation regarding medical questions and management of student-patients for the physician group, and supports ongoing development, implementation, and review of clinical improvements. Non-clinical supervision for the department physicians is provided by the Associate Director, Clinical Health Program. Administration time equating to 0.3 FTE will be attributed to assist with carrying out the specific Physician Lead duties as outlined herein.

A Student Wellness Physician provides acute, short term health care to admitted and currently registered University of Victoria students, and urgent care to faculty and staff members as required in emergency situations. Physician health care includes provision of direct medical care to students, participation in population and campus health strategies, involvement in quality service improvements, and engagement in team and campus collaborative relations. SW Physicians contribute to the operational effectiveness of the department in order to advance the quality of the UVic student experience in tandem with the triple aims of quality client care, enhanced campus/population health, and service excellence and sustainability.

In the post-secondary education context this role is, in addition to a clinical professional, fundamentally an educator and student affairs professional contributing to students’ academic and personal success. Clinical professionals providing care through Student Wellness are also student affairs practitioners who understand the context and challenges experienced by students in a higher-education environment and work to provide care that addresses their specific needs in relation to their purposes, functioning and challenges as students. UVic offers a fully integrated student wellness model and the care provided by the team of Physicians is a critical facet of the integrated care system. Physicians also regularly provide care to Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and other equity-deserving students and understand the differing care and wellness requirements for these groups.

Student Wellness provides Healthcare, Counselling, spiritual and wellness services for 22,000 students attending the University of Victoria each year. A majority of our students travel to UVic from outside of the region with 20% coming from outside of Canada and 7% of the overall UVic population identifies as First Nations. UVic Student Wellness offers collaborative and multidisciplinary care model. UVic SW operates a hybrid model of same day and regular appointments of both in-person and virtual care. The UVic SW team includes administrative staff, clinical counsellors, physicians, psychologists, registered nurses, and spiritual care providers. Students seek support primarily in the areas of mental health, sexual health and public health.
