Role and Facility Information

Family Physicians currently needed to provide primary care and urgent/emergency care services for a population of 3,500 in four communities across the traditional Nisga’a Territory of Nisga’a Valley. A supportive team of 3-4 family physicians works together to provide full-scope services (excluding obstetrics) at four Health and Wellness Centers, including being on-call 1:3. Three of the Health and Wellness Centers are staffed with full-time RNs who take first call, and the fourth center is a Mental Wellness Program Hub with primary care services one day per week.

The primary care services are provided in concert with other in-valley programs including Public Health, Mental Wellness and Addictions, Home Care, Community Wellness, and Community Rehabilitation (OT/PT), with case management for patients with complex needs. Specialist services are accessed through a combination of visiting specialists, telemedicine, and out-of-valley travel to specialists. We do not provide in-patient care; we work with in-valley first responders and regional transportation resources for clients requiring a higher level of care.

Located 100 km Northwest of Terrace, bordering British Columbia's rugged Northwest coast, the Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, picturesque fjords, dramatic lava beds, natural hot springs, and thriving rivers for outstanding outdoor recreation year-round.

Nisga’a Lisims Government, under the 2013 Treaty, has defined rights of law-making authority over lands, interests and citizenship. As Nisga’a Valley Health Authority is funded directly through the Nisga’a Nation, we are perfectly poised to develop comprehensive wellness services based on the unique needs of our Nation. In the development process, we are able to utilize the principles of Primary Health Care while honoring the timeless wholistic Nisga’a Wellness model.
