Role and Facility Information

The Medical Coordinator for Vancouver Community Child & Youth (C&Y) Mental Health Services is accountable to the program Medical Director Vancouver Community Mental Health Services to provide medical leadership for the child and youth mental health services at four Child and Youth Community Mental Health Teams: Raven Song, Pacific Spirit, Three Bridges and Northeast.

The Medical Coordinator, in partnership with the operations leaders, is accountable for the effective and efficient functioning of the programs and fostering a collaborative inter-professional environment to enhance client-centered service.

The Psychiatrist plays a critical role in linking their portfolio with community health and acute hospital services to address the ongoing needs of clients and their families in the service continuum, and to ensure a smooth transition from the acute care environment to appropriate community health services. This entails engagement with key internal and external stakeholders to achieve excellence in client and family centered care. The medical coordinator will promote the values laid out in the Child and Youth Mental Health Services Strategic plan that includes a focus on accessibility, innovation, and quality of service.

Other priorities include facilitating involvement of clinical learners and research within a complex multi-site environment that extends across the community. The medical coordinator serves as a liaison between the physicians working in the four teams and the medical director and operations manager, and assists the medical director in recruitment, retention, and performance management of medical staff.

This position requires a commitment of at least two days of clinical psychiatry work at one or more of the C&Y community mental health teams. The expected time commitment for administrative and leadership activities is 3 hours per week with four to nine clinical sessions and an option to be full-time.


A medical degree and eligibility for or licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia supplemented by medical leadership experience within a health care organization, and a three or more years in independent clinical practice. All VCH physicians must be appointed as medical staff of Vancouver Coastal Health. A clinical faculty appointment with the University Of British Columbia Faculty Of Medicine is necessary as resident supervision and involvement in education initiatives is an expectation.

In addition, the candidate will have:

Experience in a community mental health setting preferably working with marginalized populations;

Experience in caring for and treating severe mental illness, addiction, concurrent disorders and personality disorders in children and youth;

A demonstrated ability to work as a member of an inter-professional health care team

A commitment to health care quality improvement with some relevant experience or training.

A demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development.

-Monitors the efficiency and provision of safe care of the program to meet the goals and maintain the objectives of the program and organization.

-Authorizes physician sessional billings and monitors the utilization of mental health physician budget for physicians working at the four teams.

-Engages in quality improvement priorities identified by medical and operational leadership in collaboration with physicians.

-Facilitates education and research in collaboration with academic partners and operational management.
