The Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Medical Director will divide their time between the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) team and take a leadership role as a Medical Microbiologist at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) to develop strategic partnerships with Medical, Clinical, and Scientific Public Health Laboratory staff. The successful candidate will have expertise in both medical microbiology and infection control, and will have a track record of innovative leadership, with an exemplary reputation as an educator, facilitator, and advocate for excellence. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong desire to teach by example, engage in meaningful research projects, and will use modern microbiology technologies to provide evidence-based IPAC services in PHSA and British Columbia.

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Medical Director, together with the operational Director is accountable for delivering infection prevention and control quality and safety initiatives across all PHSA clinical delivery sites. Working closely with medical and operational IPAC leadership, this role will oversee strategic direction of IPAC core functions including program assessment and impact; collaboration and engagement; education; surveillance; hand hygiene; outbreak management; emergencies, disasters and major incidents; policy and decision support tools; program protocols and procedures; and research initiatives. This role also oversees the development and implementation of Infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures and Quality Improvement initiatives, in collaboration with other clinical, public health, and administrative bodies. The successful candidate will build and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including public health (and Medical Officers of Health), laboratories, public agencies and government.

As a Medical Microbiologist at the BCCDC, the successful candidate will support the Public Health Laboratory’s provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention and consultation, along with services for both direct diagnostic and treatment to people with diseases of public health importance. The BCCDC Public Health is a full-service laboratory that receives about 5,000 samples a day and has a menu of about 500 different tests. The laboratory has three CL-3 laboratories, a comprehensive biosafety program and a molecular microbiology and genomics team that is transforming public health microbiology. Working with a multi-disciplinary team, you will use state of the art molecular, genomics and metagenomics tools to develop an independent applied research program that advances the field of IPAC microbiology.

This role facilitates an integrated approach to infection control in the province that brings together the front line practice of infection control, with epidemiology and modern genomics.
This is a challenging new role in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia known for moderate temperatures, beautiful scenery, and day-trip access to oceans, mountains, outdoor recreation, plus urban entertainment, shopping, and dining.

For consideration, candidates must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia and must have obtained a Fellowship in Medical Microbiology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or hold an equivalent qualification, by the time of appointment. Candidates will also be eligible for a Partnership Affiliation with the University of British Columbia at an Associate or Professor level and provide some undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate trainee teaching. Additional skills required for this role includes leadership experience in a health care environment, and demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to inspire and build confidence in other, have a proven ability to foster cooperation and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
