Specialty Nurse Practitioner

Role and Facility Information

There are two geriatric units at Mount St. Joseph Hospital. “One South” is the 16 bed Geriatric Psychiatry Unit (GPU) for older adults with psychiatric illness such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder or dementia with psychosocial and behavioural symptoms. “Four East” is a 22 bed Geriatric Medicine Reactivation Unit that provides sub-acute medical care to older adults. Four beds are designated as shared care between Geriatric Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry providing care to patients with psychiatric illness and medical concerns.

Expected length of stay for our patients is between two to six weeks. During their stay, patients will be assessed by psychiatrists, family doctors, geriatricians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists, social workers and nurses. A treatment plan including medications and non medication treatment such as behavioural approaches will be formulated prior to discharge. The goal of treatment is to assess, treat and stabilize patients before discharging them back home.

Reporting to the Nurse Practitioner Department Head for professional issues, and Program Director for operational issues, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients/clients/residents, including diagnosing diseases, disorders, and conditions. The Nurse Practitioner initiates treatment including health care management, therapeutic interventions and prescribes medications in accordance with the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions, and employer policies and procedures. The Nurse Practitioner provides professional guidance to other health professionals and practices autonomously and interdependently within the context of an interdisciplinary health care team, making referrals to specialist physicians and other resources as appropriate.

The position collaborates with patients/clients/residents and other health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for patients/residents/clients, families and communities; develops and implements population and evidence based strategies to improve health and participates in policy-making activities that influence health services and practices. The position participates in peer review and self review to evaluate the outcome of services at the patient/client/resident, community, and population level.

QUALIFICATIONS

Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals and recent relevant clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Completion of the Basic Cardiac Life Support Course, Level C. Eligible for Appointment to the Providence Health Care Department of Nurse Practitioners as Medical Staff.
PHC will reimburse Nurse Practitioners (NPs) for the cost of the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), upon successful completion, for NP candidates who have not yet completed the exam, and who are hired into a regular or temporary position with PHC. The OSCE reimbursement is in the form of a forgivable loan, which is forgiven after one (1) year of continuous employment in a regular or temporary position with PHC.
