The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention and consultation and provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services to people with diseases of public health importance.

At BCCDC, Population & Public Health, we inform and advise on current population health policy and practice in order to promote health and reduce chronic disease and preventable injury throughout the province. Our team has expertise in epidemiology and biostatistics, project management, knowledge translation and leadership as well as in various content areas related to population and public health.

Reporting to the PHSA Vice President of Public Health and the Deputy Provincial Health Officer, the Public Health Physician, Public Health Response has a focus on responding to emerging public health issues and public health program development. This position has responsibility and accountability for providing medical expertise and medical leadership for public health policies, programs and practice, providing expert consultation services, and strengthening provincial public health networks related to emerging public health issues (e.g., pandemic response and recovery, outbreak response, substance use, mental health). The Public Health Physician, Public Health Response provides medical leadership for the BCCDC rapid response team. The Public Health Physician consults, partners, and collaborates with communities, Regional Health Authorities, First Nations Authority, Metis Nation, Office of the Provincial Health Officer, Ministry of Health and other provincial ministries and stakeholders to identify and address emerging public health issues.

BCCDC, in collaboration with public health partners, has a responsibility to identify responses to provincial population and public health priorities in BC, which may shift over time. The focus of this Public Health Physician position is to identify and respond to public health priorities through disease and policy surveillance, partner engagement and program development.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a specialist in British Columbia and hold RCPSC certification or equivalent qualifications in Public Health and Preventive Medicine or Community Medicine, have at least three years of experience in public health practice, and are eligible for appointment as clinical faculty at UBC or another BC institution of higher learning.

This role requires sound medical judgment on a wide range of public health issues, and an understanding of the structure and mandates of public health at the local, regional, provincial and national levels. Exceptional communication and cross-functional collaboration skills are also required.
