The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) provides provincial and national leadership in public health through surveillance, detection, prevention and consultation and provides both direct diagnostic and treatment services to people with diseases of public health importance. Clinical Prevention Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), a Program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), are a team of clinical and public health experts focused on health promotion, harm reduction, prevention and treatment services.

The BC Centre for Disease Control in Vancouver, BC, is currently seeking to hire a Public Health Physician for Clinical Prevention Services (CPS), with a focus on advancing public health practice in the area of substance use and harm reduction (SU/HR).

Reporting to the Medical Director, Clinical Prevention Services, this position has responsibility and accountability for providing medical expertise and medical leadership for public health policies, programs and practice, providing expert consultation services, and strengthening provincial public health networks related to SU/HR. The Public Health Physician consults, partners, and collaborates with Indigenous communities, Regional Health Authorities, First Nations Authority, Metis Nation, people with lived experience of substance use, Office of the Provincial Health Officer, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions and other stakeholders to address substance SU/HR-related public health issues. The public health physician in this role will take a medical expert and lead role across BCCDC for cross-program SU/HR initiatives, including the response to the provincial overdose emergency.

Applicants must be eligible for licensure as a specialist in British Columbia and hold RCPSC certification or equivalent qualifications in a specialty related to substance use and harm reduction, and are eligible for appointment as clinical faculty at UBC. You have comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of regulatory agencies, policies, legislation, and processes that govern and are relevant to environmental health. This role requires sound medical judgment on a wide range of substance use and harm reduction issues, and an understanding of the structure and mandates of Health Authorities in the province is an asset. Exceptional communication and cross-functional collaboration skills are required together with knowledge of budget preparation and control, and quality control practices in a substance use and harm reduction health setting.
