Role and Facility Information

Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is seeking a psychiatrist to work in Burnaby on the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT).

This is a part time position requiring 5 days per week. Participation in the on-call rota is mandatory. The Burnaby Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team, is a 24/7 community-based enhanced service for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness with significant functional impairments who have not connected with or responded well to traditional outpatient mental health care and psychiatric rehabilitation services.

The team’s clients are offered the supports and clinical services of a full service ACT team. ACT is a well researched evidence-based transdisciplinary model that has a client-staff ratio of 10:1, with 80% of the work occurring in the community. Crisis support is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Program staff is closely involved in hospital admissions and discharges.


As part of a multidisciplinary team, this position plays a role in assessing, diagnosing, treating up to 100 clients with complex psychiatric disorders. The Psychiatrist possesses solid clinical judgment, a thorough knowledge of psychopharmacology and experience with severe mental illness, Axis II disorders, and substance use. The Psychiatrist plays a lead role in coordinating care with inpatient treatment, and provides a service on an outreach basis as needed.

The ideal candidate is experienced with urban populations with complex health conditions; you are thoughtful and passionate about recovery for people with serious mental illness and are interested in assisting the ACT leadership team in the developing the full potential of the model.

The psychiatrist will work with the team coordinator to: build the capacity of the team by coaching, teaching, and modeling cross-disciplinary respect and learning; ensure the team meets fidelity standards for the ACT model and that Fraser Health’s values and philosophy of self-determination/choice, harm reduction and recovery are expressed in all aspects of team practice. The Psychiatrist demonstrates leadership by ensuring that client’s self identified goals for recovery and community integration are supported by appropriate services and practices.
