Role and Facility Information

The Division of Internal Medicine at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) has openings for additional General Internists for a temporary 6 month term.

We are a collegial group dedicated to improving service delivery to NRGH. Given the rising numbers of COVID infections in Central Vancouver Island, we are looking for temporary internists who have experience managing COVID patients and are willing to assume care of complex medical inpatients who have tested positive for COVID and provide sick-day relief of call duties for internists who are under investigation for COVID with results pending or who are ill with COVID themselves.

Successful physicians will be encouraged to apply for a permanent position with the group.


•Attending staff for the Respiratory Investigation Unit/COVID ward, providing consultative services and assuming MRP for up to 15 patients from 8-5 for one week at a time, once per month.
•Provide 24 hour call starting at 8AM , respond to telephone calls and provide advice within 2 hours, respond to emergencies in person within 30 minutes, admit patients from the Emergency Department and provide consultative services to other physician groups, 3-4 calls per month
•Read ECGs, supervise treadmill and MIBI (stress tests), order cardiac testing (echo, transesophageal echo, cardiac MRI, persantine/dobutamine MIBI, cardiac CT, angiography) for patients with heart failure, coronary artery disease, valvular, aortic disease and manage unstable arrhythmias AF, SVT, VT, bradycardias and liase with the appropriate higher of levels of care if patients require transfer to ICU, CCU within the hospital or outside of the hospital.
•Teach family medicine residents, general internal medicine fellows, nurse practitioners
•Participate in improving IHealth and physician electronic orders

Nanaimo, population 85,000, is a growing and vibrant urban centre situated on the east coast of Vancouver Island, located approximately 100 kilometers north of Victoria and offers excellent access via commercial flights, float plane or ferry to Vancouver. The community offers a wide variety of cultural and educational opportunities including the 800 seat waterfront Port Theatre, the Vancouver Island University and is adjacent renowned private schools.
