Role and Facility Information

St. Paul’s Hospital is an inner city hospital within downtown Vancouver. It provides acute and short-term outpatient care for a complex population with co-morbid illness that includes substance use. The focus of the hospital is on acute care and access for short-term outpatient care while working closely with community providers in the city.

The hospital is seeking a Permanent Adult Psychiatrist to work in both the Brief Intervention Clinic (BIC), and Psychiatric Acute Stabilization Unit (PASU). BIC is a teaching clinic that is supported by nursing and social work. It is a rapid access clinic that responds to the needs of the emergency and acute services. PASU is a short stay acute inpatient unit which provides treatment and stabilization for complex psychiatric patients. The patients seen within both services include mood disorder, psychotic illnesses and substance use with secondary psychosis. It is a population that requires an inter-disciplinary approach and good relationships within the community.

An interest in acute care psychiatry with a complex population is essential to the position. An ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses and other team members is of vital importance in this work. Good verbal and written communication as well as reliability and consistency are important for successful applicants. Candidate must hold a Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, Specialist qualifications in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and eligibility for a clinical faculty appointment with the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

Additionally, the candidate should have:

• A demonstrated ability working as a member of an interdisciplinary mental health team.

• A commitment to participate in new methods in health improvement and care delivery.

• Experience working with a General psychiatric disorders population of varying complexity.

• Experience with academic psychiatry.

• Publications in academic journals.

Our department prides itself on collegiality and support of its members. St. Paul’s Hospital is a teaching hospital and there is a requirement to provide supervision to residents and students.

In addition, the department is looking for members who are interested in research, leadership and quality improvement.
