Role and Facility Information

The Cowichan District Hospital orthopedic group is seeking Royal College certified orthopedic applicants with additional fellowship training in orthopedic trauma and post-traumatic reconstruction. The applicant must be applicable for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

This position is a unique position that serves the needs of the hospital and community, consisting of a community based orthopedic trauma surgeon (not including spine/pelvis trauma). This position includes approximately 12 days of on call per month (2/5 call) and 1.0 days of protected trauma time per week (2 half-days or 1 full day) and 1.0 full day of orthopedic outpatient hospital clinic time (7.5 hours)

Other optional clinical activities include the ability to assist in non-trauma orthopedic elective slates and office consultations in a central-intake model.

The Cowichan District Hospital enjoys an exceptionally collegial atmosphere amongst the family practice and specialist medical staff. Clinical specialist colleagues include General Surgery, Anesthesiology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, Pathology and Radiology. The Cowichan District Hospital, with 111 acute care beds, serves an immediate referral population of 82,000 runs three operating rooms, a six-bed ICU and has on site CT/MRI and PACS medical imaging system.

Future plans include a new hospital with approximately 200 beds, 7 operating rooms and state of the art surgical/ambulatory care centres.
