Role and Facility Information

The Ophthalmology Department at Vancouver Acute has an opening for a new comprehensive ophthalmologist.

The successful candidate must have Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status, be licensed to practice in British Columbia, CMPA coverage, and have Royal College certification. She or he will be required to maintain a Vancouver office and provide primary eye care for the population of Vancouver.

With the position come admitting and operating privileges at Vancouver General Hospital Eye Care Centre and access to the treatment room and shared lasers at the Eye Care Centre. The successful applicant will be granted a teaching position with the University of British Columbia

Responsibilities include sharing in the on-call rota for the group and taking an active role in the teaching of medical students, residents, colleagues, nurses, and others as determined by the department head. At a minimum this will involve having medical students in her/his private office one half day per week and supervising the resident clinic one half day per week. Resident surgical teaching is expected during allocated OR time. There is also a requirement for participation on committees within the department and hospital, attendance at departmental meetings, and a willingness to contribute to clinical research. A half day of attendance, monthly, at the Downtown Eastside Eye Clinic is also expected.

Preference will be given to candidates with the potential to contribute significantly to the academic and administrative goals of the Department and University. An established record in comprehensive ophthalmology is not required, but a strong vision for how the applicant would enhance current Departmental programming is needed. An interest areas such as trainee wellness, professionalism, educational program development, or quality improvement would be an asset.

Letters of reference indicating good character, evidence of contribution to the ‘common good’, competence in cataract surgery for stage of career, and potential for teaching medical students and residents are essential.
