BC Children's Hospital (BCCH) cares for the province's most acutely ill or injured children and youth, provides developmental and rehabilitation services to children and youth throughout BC, and offers a broad range of health services. Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children (SHHC), a leading provincial facility offering specialized services to children and youth with developmental disabilities from birth to age 19, works collaboratively with BCCH. SHHC focuses on the child and their family while supporting health care professionals in their community. BCCH also operates a wide number of specialized health programs, is a leading acute care teaching facility, and conducts research to advance health and care through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute and in partnership with the University of British Columbia.

Reporting to the Head of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia, the Director of Research will develop, promote and attain the mission, goals and objectives of the BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) Department of Anesthesia and the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics (APT), the University of British Columbia (UBC), by providing leadership in research for Pediatric Anesthesia. The Director will be the Department representative at the BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (BCCHRI), a joint research initiative of the Provincial Services Health Authority (PHSA) and UBC.

In collaboration with Department of Pediatric Anesthesia (BCCH), the Director will develop a research vision consistent with the academic and clinical vision of the Department and will develop specific implementation strategies to achieve this vision. The Director will maintain current local, national and international collaborations and develop new collaborations to support the research vision.

The Director, will ensure that research and research training is conducted safely and at the highest standard, in collaboration with the Head of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia at BCCH and the Head of Department of APT. The Director will be responsible for the Pediatric Anesthesia Research Team which includes highly motivated investigators, research assistants, a research manager, a grant facilitator, clinical and research fellows and is integrated with the Electrical Computer Engineering in Medicine group at UBC.

Responsibilities will include the oversight of the quality and safety of research for all the medical staff, research support personnel and students and support the career development of all members of the Department of Pediatric Anesthesia. The Director will be responsible for overall financial and personnel decisions including recruitment and retention of researchers, trainees and research support staff. The Director will be expected to maintain an independent research program. This should include local, national and international funding, publications and representation at local, national and international research organizations.
