Role and Facility Information

Come and experience a rewarding practice experience and West Coast lifestyle! We have a full-time locum opportunity for a Family Physician to provide primary care services in scenic Tofino and neighbouring Ahousaht. The practice consists of three days/week at the Medical Clinic and offers a mixed family practice comprised of patients from all walks of life. The other one day/week - travel by float plane or boat to Ahousaht - a First Nations community on Flores Island north of Tofino in the heart of Clayoquot Sound. The holistic centre offers a family practice clinic in close affiliation with local services including community nursing, counselling and child, youth and family development services. The Tofino General Hospital provides inpatient services (no elective obstetrics). Six Family Physicians in Tofino and Ucluelet provide 1:6 on-call services to the small emergency department. Primary referral centres are West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and visiting specialists provide services to the local area. Housing options are available, and assistance in sourcing local accommodation will be provided.

Community Information

Located on the beautiful west coast of Vancouver Island, the communities of Tofino and Ucluelet are just 30 minutes apart. Joined by the Pacific Rim National Park, and incorporating part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, they have become two of Canada’s most sought after tourist destinations.

Including six surrounding First Nations communities and various work communities, the region has a combined population of about 6000 year-round residents. During the tourist season, the area population increases substantially.

Offering a relaxed and rewarding West Coast lifestyle the area boasts miles of sandy beaches, a multitude of trails through old growth forests, hot springs and more. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy surfing, beach walking, whale watching, kayaking, golf, fishing, hiking and storm watching. Tofino can easily be covered on foot and features boutiques, art galleries, B & B’s, world-class resorts, restaurants and quaint cafés.

Tofino’s harbour bustles with local fishermen and is the launch point for numerous sea kayaking and whale watching tours.
