Fraser Health is inviting applications for a Consultant, Geriatric Psychiatry to provide psychiatric support to frail and elderly patients with cognitive loss and multiple medical problems in long-term care homes. In conjunction with the GP MRP, the Consultant will promote and build capacity for effective person-centred care.

This role will be collaborative in nature with staff and physicians developing standards of best practice and implementing processes that monitor and promote timely and quality access to medical care.

Services:

“Direct Patient Care” means clinical intervention with a specific patient present. Examples of direct patient care include, but are not limited to:

Consultation, examination, and assessment;

Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests;

Diagnosis and treatment;

Counselling; and

Ongoing monitoring of a patient’s condition, where appropriate.

“Indirect Patient Care” means clinical intervention with a specific patient present. Examples of direct patient care include, but are not limited to:

Patient conferences and patient-specific team meetings, telephone consultations and chart/report writing;

Arranging for related assessments, procedures and/or therapy as may be appropriate, and interpreting the results;

Arranging for follow-up care;

Discussion with and providing advice and information to the patient or the patient’s representative regarding the patient’s conditions and recommended therapy;

Making and maintaining an adequate medical record of the encounter as well as completing discharge summaries;

Arranging for transfers for procedures and/or therapy as may be appropriate;

Consultation/communication with other programs and/or agencies; and

Consultation/communication with other health care providers and support workers (e.g., income support workers and homemakers)

“Clinical Administrative Services” means the participation in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of the Services that require the professional expertise of a physician, including participation in medical audits, interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews and incident report reviews, where such activities are specific to the Services in the contract.

Qualifications and Experience:

Demonstrative ability to work collaboratively with physicians, staff, and community

Speciality certification or significant clinical experience in geriatric psychiatry

Eligible for Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) and Medical Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia

Coverage with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is mandatory

Compensation:

Blended billing model: fee-for-service (estimated $250,000 in billings) with 5 sessions per week at the current specialist rate ($556.40/3.5 hours = $158.97/hour) over 48 weeks ($133,536) to supplement for non-billable services.

Up to $10,000

Location:

Multiple long-term care homes based on need in the Fraser-North and Fraser-South regions.

Reporting Structure:

Reports to the Regional Medical Director, Residential Care & Assisted Living, and the Regional Division Head, Geriatric Psychiatry.
