Role and Facility Information

The Medical Director – At-Home Supports is accountable to the Senior Medical Director VCH Vancouver - Community Health Services for the medical leadership for STAT Centre, Home-Vive and Home Oxygen service areas of VCH Vancouver Community Health Services.

The Medical Director, in partnership with designated senior management leaders is co-responsible for the operations and management of programs/services within Community Care/AT-Home Supports program areas. He/she oversees operations related to the diagnosis, care and treatment of patients/residents and provides medical leadership and strategic direction to ensure high quality and effective delivery of medical services to support the At-Home healthcare needs of a frail elderly population within an academic, research and client-centered environment. He/she works as a team player with colleagues and co-workers to identify service delivery models and processes that seamlessly integrate services within the acute care, community care and primary health care networks and focus those through a “People-First” lens to better enable healthier lives, meet the needs of the community and enhance overall system sustainability. The Medical Director is directly responsible for human resource management of the medical and PhD scientific staff within the programs/service area, including maintenance of medical and ethical standards of practice, medical workforce planning, and credentialing of staff. Additionally, the incumbent leads or participates in local/regional/provincial working groups/committees to plan new initiatives and provide guidance in the identification of emerging issues and opportunities and influence the development of long term directions, priorities and strategic options to address his/her portfolio issues.

The Medical Director will work with the respective Head, Department of Family and Community Practice, VGH and UBCH to credential and privilege all new staff working in the program and on physician quality and safety related issues.


A Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia supplemented by at least five years’ recent experience in medical administration in a progressively more complex and senior leadership role within a large teaching hospital and a proven track-record in clinical practice in a relevant area of specialty. Eligibility for a faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia, School of Medicine required. The applicant must have a demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development.

In addition, the candidate will have:

• At least 5 years-experience in geriatrics, preferably working with an transitional care population;

• Proven experience in a medical leadership role;

• A demonstrated ability to work as a member of an inter-professional health care team; and

• A commitment to participate in new methods in health improvement and care delivery, including best practices model and shared care.

4. Understands available resources and needs for clinic/program/site and keeps quality in the forefront of all resource decisions; provides feedback and makes recommendations for corrective action.

5. Applies systems and critical thinking in identifying issues and solving problems and implementing effective strategies and processes in addressing and resolving issues.

6. Uses sound business acumen to develop and foster collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

7. Inspires a shared vision and aligns performance goals and objectives for medical staff to ensure match with service delivery strategy while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness.

8. Provides timely and appropriate advice and consultation utilizing effective targeted communication strategies to gain acceptance of recommendations and to facilitate effective decision making and operations within the intent of the medical by-laws.

9. Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist the Communities of Care and VCH to meet its strategic directions.

10. Monitors the efficiency and provision of safe care of the program to meet the goals and maintain the objectives of the program and organization.

11. Engages in quality improvement, development quality improvement indicators and drafting clinical quality improvement plans.

12. Drafts a Physician Workforce Development Plan

13. Develops a Physician Engagement Plan
