Clinical Manager, Nursing Team – Vancouver
Regular Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

Reporting to and working closely with the Director, Program Development & Administration, the Clinical Nursing Manager contributes to developing, implementing and evaluating programs and services delivered through Canuck Place Children’s Hospice – Vancouver location , consistent with the organization’s strategic priorities, philosophy, mission, goals and established program and clinical standards to ensure the delivery of safe, high quality care to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Ensures Vancouver Coastal Health licensing regulations are met.

The Clinical Nursing Manager provides day to day leadership and is accountable for the efficient and effective delivery of inpatient services, including the overall management and direction of the assigned staff, and assisting in the development of and overseeing the applicable budget. The Nursing Manager provides leadership in promoting excellence in pediatric palliative care practice by applying and evaluating standards, policies, and practices, promoting evidence-based practice and quality improvement processes. Models joint decision making and ensures the provision of an interdisciplinary work environment through the maintenance of positive working relationships with staff, volunteers, children and families, clinical, administrative and other regional and provincial leadership positions.

Performed in conjunction with or under the direction of the Director, Program Development & Administration.

• Provides day to day administrative and operational leadership to ensure children and families have access to inpatient beds as required, receive safe and quality care, and staff has manageable workloads within budgeted staffing levels to meet the operational needs.
• Accountable for recruitment, interviewing and hiring, and coordinating orientation of nursing and other designated staff.
• Evaluates employee performance and skill level, develops action plans and initiates training and development programs working in collaboration with the Professional Practice Leader, Nursing and Nurse Educator.
• Enhances individual and staff morale by team building, encouraging dialogue and facilitating resolutions to work issues, and supporting staff through coaching, guiding and modeling key behaviors and strategies.
• Provides direction to team members to define shared and individual goals, meet target dates, and ensure alignment of team goals to overall goals and objectives of the organization.
• Collaborates with other departments throughout the hospice to ensure coordinated, integrated service delivery. Advocates for appropriate allocation of resources to meet child/family needs.
• Manages operations by assessing and monitoring staff/patient ratios and supplies based on patient acuity and staff skill level. Approves adjustments to staffing levels to meet patient/family needs. Defines an effective workforce plan that ensures the availability of adequate staff within the context of operational demands and environmental and resource constraints.
• Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of continuous quality improvement and service delivery initiatives, program goals, objectives, policies, procedures and priorities that meet the needs of the pediatric palliative care population. Participates on relevant quality committees and develops mechanisms to involve nursing staff, physicians, other interdisciplinary team members in practice and operational changes.
• Participates with the Professional Practice Leader, Nursing in the development and implementation of best practices for clinical practice which promote quality and safe patient care, ensuring a consistency with the organization’s standards of care and strategic direction. Ensures communication of changes to children, families and direct care staff.
• Monitors quality outcomes, and assists in the development of methodologies, quality indicators, evidence based outcomes, accreditation and audit activities in conjunction with the Professional Practice Leader, Nursing, Director of Program Development and Administration and the Medical Director.
• Investigates, and conducts root cause analyses on incident reports (child, families and staff), letters of complaint/concerns, follows up on action plans, and communicates outcomes to incident reporters. Identifies potential practice changes and/or quality improvement initiatives for review by quality committees.
• Leads through example and empowers autonomy and accountability of various team members. Fosters a culture of learning, collaboration, teamwork and respect.
• Works with the Clinical Program Leaders and Nurse Educator to promote a continuing education climate by identifying education needs with staff and encouraging staff to pursue further education.
• Prepares, monitors, and analyzes staffing, and operating, and capital budgets for the service delivery cost centers in collaboration with the Director of Program Development and Administration.
• Develops effective and efficient practices and processes to measure use of resources and the quality of care rendered within the allocated budget.
• Promotes patient safety by ongoing monitoring of clinical practices and the work environment to minimize risk of patient harm. Identifies areas of improvement and leads and collaborates with various quality committees to ensure best practices in patient safety.
• Provides leadership and direction in the identification, selection, evaluation and acquisition of equipment and maintains a preventative maintenance program to provide a safe environment for children, families and staff.
• Fosters open communication and cooperative working relationships with staff, physicians, volunteers, children/families, volunteers, health care providers and members of the community.
• Monitors and approves requests for overtime, vacation, leaves of absences, and sick time.
• Maintains current knowledge of developments and trends in management theory and techniques and pediatric, palliative care delivery systems.
• Performs other related responsibilities as required.


Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing coupled with a Master’s Degree in Nursing or health care related field (e.g. Health Administration, Leadership, etc.), plus a minimum of 5 years recent related clinical experience. Extensive health care management experience in pediatric and/or palliative care; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. This will include a minimum of 2 years working in a managerial/leadership capacity. Experience as a clinical manager of an inpatient nursing unit is an asset. Current registration with CRNBC.

Flexibility is necessary, as this position may require occasional weekend and evening work and travel within the Lower Mainland.
