Role and Facility Information
Youth Concurrent Disorders Psychiatrist, 2 days per week (0.4 FTE)
Vancouver Community Mental Health Services is expanding services to vulnerable, disenfranchised youth and young adults in Vancouver.
The psychiatrist who accepts this position will provide psychiatric management as part of a multi-disciplinary team to a diverse population of youth who present with mental health, addiction and medical issues. This is an exciting opportunity to work with young people who are otherwise not accessing traditional mental health services.
The psychiatrist, who should have experience with treating young adolescents and young adults, will be part of a citywide team which takes a collaborative approach in working with youth who are often difficult to engage and have complex mental health and addiction needs. The physician will assist in assessment and treatment of youth in low barrier housing, detox and substance-use recovery beds. Communication and collaboration with addiction counselors, nurse practitioners and family physicians are crucial for successful outcomes in this population.
The program is currently implementing a strategic plan that will improve the quality and accessibility of mental health services. Given the challenges faced by this population we are looking for a psychiatrist who is creative and interested in innovative approaches to service provision. The physician interested in this position should be prepared to work with a diverse population and be aware of the cultural context of the work.
The psychiatrist will be involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs. There are opportunities to involve learners and to conduct research. Participation in the community-based on-call group is optional.
Qualifications:
• A Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
• Specialist qualification in psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and ideally with added qualification in addiction medicine and/or child and youth psychiatry.
• A faculty appointment with the University of British Columbia Faculty Of Medicine is ideal.
• The successful candidate must join the Medical Staff of Vancouver Coastal Health if not already a member.
• Additionally, the candidate should have:
• A demonstrated ability working as a member of an inter-professional health care team.
• Experience in community-based psychiatric care
• Experience in assessing and treating substance use disorders
• Familiarity with the concept of recovery in mental health
Reporting Relationship:
The psychiatrist will report to the Medical Director of Vancouver Community Mental Health Services through the Medical Manager of the Child & Youth Mental Health Program.
