Role and Facility Information


The RCH Department of Medicine is looking for a clinical Rheumatologist. The successful candidate will provide Rheumatology consultation services for the hospital approximately 3 months per year. There is also the expectation to provide inpatient coverage for the Clinical Teaching Unit at Royal Columbian Hospital when there is a need. He/she will provide teaching for learners in the form of medical students, residents and fellows and take part in educational and administrative activities. Urgent consults seen in hospital are provided a call back fee in addition to MSP billing. Further clinical details can be discussed with interested applicants.

This position offers the opportunity to practice as a Rheumatologist in a tertiary care academic centre. The candidate will also be expected to be involved in teaching in General Rheumatology. He/she will be expected to participate in Journal Clubs, Rounds and other academic endeavours.

The position is scheduled to start January 1, 2018.

The successful candidate must meet the following qualifications:

•Must have passed the Royal College Examination in Internal Medicine & Rheumatology

•He/she must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC

•He/she must demonstrate evidence of sufficient clinical experience in all areas of Rheumatology and inpatient General Medicine on a CTU

•Experience and demonstrated skills in leadership, medical administration, and/or teaching will be considered an asset.

Royal Columbian Hospital is a provincial referral hospital (tertiary/trauma care centre) located in New Westminster, BC, with 422 acute beds that is a University of BC Affiliated teaching hospital that offers medical, surgical, advanced diagnostics & imaging, critical care, inpatient pediatrics, levels 1 & 3 obstetrics, outpatient clinics, level 2 & 3 neonatology, cardiac surgery, neurosciences, and tertiary programs as well as 24/7 emergency services with 75,986 visits annually.

The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment is a multi-year, multi-phase project to increase the hospital's capacity, beds and services. Phase one is underway and includes multiple projects, many which prepare the hospital’s infrastructure for future expansion as well as a new 75-bed mental health and substance use wellness centre with more outpatient clinics by late 2019/early 2020. Phase two, if approved by government, proposes to add an acute care tower with more beds for intensive care, cardiac intensive care, obstetrics and medicine/surgical and a new larger emergency by late 2022. Phase three proposes to upgrade existing buildings to support areas in the Health Care Centre, such as the laboratory and pharmacy, by 2025.
