Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

The Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) plans, manages and evaluates selected specialty and province wide health care services across BC, working with the five geographic health authorities to deliver province-wide solutions that improve the health of British Columbians. PHSA embodies values that reflect a commitment to excellence. These include:
Respect people • Be compassionate • Dare to innovate • Cultivate partnerships • Serve with purpose

PHSA together with BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS) will take on responsibility for the delivery of health care services in BC Corrections facilities as of October 2017. PHSA is mandated to improve the quality and continuity of care for inmates across the province during their time in correctional facilities and as they reintegrate into the community. This will help to improve access to primary health care, as well as mental health and substance use supports for inmates, key needs that have been identified not just in BC, but internationally.

Family Practitioner
Opportunities available in Maple Ridge

Family Practitioner services are a crucial component in Correctional Health care. Persons in custody
may be admitted with, or develop during their time in custody, medical, mental health, and/or substance use disorders that require expert evaluation and intervention. The Family Practitioner therefore is an important member of the health care team and works closely with the Psychiatrist, Nurses, Health Care Management, and other professionals and staff. The work is both interesting and challenging. Experience in working with patients across a broad spectrum of psychiatric illness, substance use disorders, and personality difficulties, is a definite advantage. The Family Practitioner will be a member of the PHSA Medical Staff with a contract that permits services to be billed mainly as Fee for Service with a small number of sessions for work that cannot be billed to the Medical Services Plan
