Specialty Family Practitioner/General Practitioner

Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

This opportunity is in the heart of sunny Okanagan wine country, where lifestyle and rewarding medical practice combine perfectly. Summerland is a lovely town on the western shore of Okanagan Lake with a rich agricultural history, fabulous wineries, sandy beaches, and so much more.
Our senior and managing partner is looking to step back from daily family medicine to pursue other interests, so we are searching for a replacement to take over his practice in the Rosedale Medical group clinic in downtown Summerland. We are a friendly and flexible group practice of eight young family physicians, sharing an office with 5 sets of exam rooms, and it is a fun place to practice medicine. We have a well-equipped procedure room, and light-filled office space on the second floor of a dedicated medical building, with wonderful support from both nurses and medical office assistants. Each physician has her/his own patient panel and clinic schedule, which is negotiable, but we help each other out. We share hospital rounds (one week out of seven) and after-hours clinic work (one evening every other week), and help cover each other for leaves if needed, though we have always enjoyed good locum support. Obstetrics and emergency are not required, but there are opportunities for those interested. Surgical assists and addictions/mental health clinic work is also available to qualified applicants.
The practice available has 1300 patients, is very settled after 12 years of continuity care, and has well maintained and updated electronic records (Med-Access since 2008). It has traditionally been run with 2 full and 2 half office day per week, and provides a historical income of $300,000-350,000 per year. Office overheads are shared fairly with the other 7 members of the group and would be approximately $5500 per month.

Interested applicants would be offered a 6 month 'locum' where they would bill, and pay overhead, as if a full part of the group but get to try out the practice, see if it is a good fit for them and vice versa, before signing on as a full partner when they are ready.

We admit to Penticton Regional Hospital (area population 40,000) 15 minutes south of us, and see patients in Summerland's residential care facilities. The hospital has excellent specialist services which are very supportive of family practice, and there is an active local "Division of Family Practice" engaged in improving community primary care systems. Our clinic is one of four primary sites for the UBC Southern Medical Residency Program, so you will have opportunity to teach and mentor, if desired. We also regularly host medical students and pride ourselves on providing learners a good experience in Summerland.

Recreational activities abound, from the lakes and hike/bike trails to the nearby world-class ski hills. We also have excellent educational & cultural resources available, and--for those wanting more traffic or an urban fix--Kelowna (metropolitan area population 180,000) is under an hour's drive away, and Vancouver less than an hour's flight. We are not too big or too small--just right
