Providence Health Care: Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Physician Program Director, Maternity Services

Providence Health Care (PHC) is seeking expressions of interest from suitable qualified candidates for the role of Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the closely aligned operational role as Physician Program Director, Maternity Services, including medical operational leadership for gynecologic surgery.

PHC is one of the largest faith-based Health Care organizations in Canada. It is a dynamic academic health care network operating tertiary and community acute care sites, rehabilitation and residential facilities in Vancouver, BC. Working in strong collaborative relationships with key partners including the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, the University of British Columbia, the Provincial Health Services Authority, and others, we contribute to the spectrum of health care delivery in British Columbia and provide leading services and internationally recognized research and teaching. An exciting and unique component of this role is participation in the active planning for the Department and Program in the rebuilding of St Paul’s Hospital on a new academic campus of care.

The Department has approximately 18 Active/full-time members and overlaps two clinical programs at Providence Health Care – those of Maternity and Surgery. There are approximately 1600 deliveries annually and the Department performs a regional and provincial role in managing medical complex and high-risk mothers in collaboration with partners at BC Women’s Hospital. In addition to general aspects of women’s health and gynecology, the Department has areas of focused expertise and academic accomplishment in urogynecology and medical complications of pregnancy.

General overview of the position and responsibilities:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and the Strategic and Ethical framework of PHC, the PHC Department Head:

• Provides direct leadership and oversees all aspects of the PHC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

• Participates in and represent PHC in Vancouver Coastal Health Regional matters and with other provincial partner organizations

• Works closely and collaboratively with the Regional Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Vancouver Costal Health and Providence Health Care

• Is a member of the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and works collaboratively with the Head of the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in fostering and building an academic Department to further research and training in the Department

• Provides clinical, academic, operational and strategic advice to PHC leadership developed in consultation with Department members

In general, the PHC Department Head is accountable to:

• The Vice President of Medical Affairs, the PHC Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), and in turn to the Board of Directors, for matters of professional practice including appointment and credentialing, medical manpower planning, physician performance, medical quality evaluation and innovation and leadership in improving all aspects of patient care quality,

• The Vice President of Acute Clinical Programs for strategic planning for the program and integration of Medical Staff services within the programs the Department participates in,

• The Regional Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology, VCH and PHC, in the primary responsibilities of that role in overall Regional Medical Human Resource Planning and Medical Quality and Physician Performance enhancement, and

• The Department Head, Faculty of Medicine, UBC for academic matters.

Requirements & Remuneration
• Remuneration is at a rate agreed upon with PHC in accordance with duties, experience and required time

Term of Appointment
• The PHC Department Head may be appointed for a maximum of two (2) consecutive five (5) year terms

• Candidates must be MDs and appropriately certified with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada, licensed with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC, and maintain membership in good standing with these organizations

• The candidate will have demonstrated superior interpersonal and management skills that will enable the VCH and PHC Department to maintain and further develop clinical, research and teaching expertise

• Candidates will have more than five (5) years of recent clinical leadership experience in an acute care setting and demonstrated clinical excellence and outcomes. This experience will be complemented by knowledge of quality/risk management, accreditation guidelines and relevant legislation

• Have a demonstrated capacity for research and ability to provide mentorship for academic endeavors
