Licensing / Registration

To be eligible for registration with the CAMRT, all internationally educated Medical Radiation Technologists must undergo an assessment to determine language proficiency, substantial similarity of qualifications and work experience to a Canadian experience before applying to write the CAMRT certification exam. Applicants are required to submit information for this assessment. The submitted documentation will be reviewed by CAMRT to determine eligibility to apply to write CAMRT’s entry-to-practice certification exams in any one of the following disciplines:  Radiological Technology, Nuclear Medicine, Magnetic Resonance, and Radiation Therapy.

Orientation Course

Orientation to the Canadian Health Care System, Culture and Context is a course designed for internationally educated health professionals who are in the process of becoming licensed in Canada. It is offered through the University of Toronto.
This course provides learners with a deepened understanding of the Canadian health care system, what Canadian patients expect from their health care providers, and how to communicate with patients and caregivers. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with other internationally educated health care professionals in a supportive learning environment.
This orientation program is offered for both those who have arrived in Canada and those who have not yet arrived. This is not a bridging program. Please note this course is available in English only. Find out more here. 

Bridging Program

A bridging program will assess and evaluate the unique needs of IEMRTs, recognize prior knowledge and experience, and support IEMRTs from initial interest to employment thus preparing the IEMRT for safe and effective practice in a Canadian health care environment.
 
The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences (MI) – Toronto, Ontario

If you were qualified as a health professional in any country outside Canada, you may be eligible to enroll with Bridging Program for International Health Professionals to assist you in certification and registration within Canada. Based on the decision given by the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) following an evaluation of your application, an individualized program will be developed to prepare you to write the CAMRT certification examination. The program is designed specifically for you based on the decision by CMRITO. Your program could take as little as four weeks up to a full year. Due to the customized nature of the program, there is no fixed program fee. Tuition is charged and paid for on a course by course basis. Courses are offered at The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences in Toronto Ontario.


Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) – Edmonton, Alberta

NAIT’s Medical Radiological Technology Bridging Program will provide tools to assess and enhance the practical readiness of internationally-educated medical radiological (x-ray) technologists for the Alberta workplace. The Bridging Program will promote high standards of practice in the Medical Radiation Technology (MRT) profession in Alberta while helping integrate foreign workers into the workplace. Internationally-educated x-ray technologists eligible to work in Alberta will be able to access the Bridging Program on a user-pay basis to assess their readiness for Canadian certification and Alberta licensure.

Internationally-educated x-ray technologists will be clinically tested to verify their knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet Alberta’s and Canada’s standards of practice. If gaps are identified during the clinical skills assessment, remediation will be available to help develop necessary skills. NAIT’s Bridging Program will offer the entire package of clinical assessment, remediation, and skills development.

A Canadian Medical Radiation Technologist must have completed an accredited educational program in medical radiation technology at an approved Canadian educational institution as the minimal educational requirement for entry-level education in Canada. Canadian MRTs are also required to be certified by the CAMRT to practice in BC.

MRTs From Within Canada

If you are a Medical Radiation Technologist currently registered with a full registration status in a Canadian jurisdiction, you may be eligible for full registration under the Agreement on Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA). Under the Labour Mobility Agreement, no new requirements are required with the exception of a review of previous discipline history and other administrative matters.
