Role and Facility Information

The Sunshine Coast is one of BC's most scenic regions. Against the backdrop of the Coastal Mountain Range, the lower Sunshine Coast area contains a host of mountain bike and cross country ski trails, miles of beaches and numerous activities on and off the water for the outdoor enthusiast. The area is home to nearly 31,000 residents including a large indiginous population who remain very active in community. The population of the coast is primarily based in the three larger towns of Gibsons, Sechelt and Pender Harbour. The community is accessible by ferry from West Vancouver via Horseshoe Bay and from Powell River via Saltery Bay.

The Lower Sunshine Coast is looking for a full time resident Pediatrician to provide pediatric care in the community and supportive care for our increasingly busier hospital.

The duties will include community consultation service, liaison with community pediatric allied care, and hospital consults for emergency and neonatal care. They will need to be familiar with the rural setting and be supportive of family physicians and registered midwives in the provision of that care.

We are a unique community in that we are only one hour away from multiple tertiary centres however this is by water and air transport only and we have been completely isolated for days when weather is not permitting. We have approximately 150 to 200 births a year cared for by a collaborative maternity group of family doctors and registered midwives. This group was recently awarded the RCC Coaching Grant and identified pediatric coaches as a critical support for the maternity community.

According to the 2016 census children between the ages of 0 to 19 comprised about 16% of the population of the Coast. That figure significantly underestimates the total number of children who reside on the Coast in the summer and holidays as we are a holiday destination regardless of Pandemics.

This beautiful outdoor playground that we call home has long been a known retirement community but is now attracting more young couples and families. We wish to assure them that we are committed to providing excellent health care to all members of their families. Sustainability of youth in our community is vital. They are our future and carry a significant burden of labour, skills, and expertise that allow us to continue functioning.

The pediatric services that have been provided in the past through the NITAOP program are simply no longer adequate. Having a local pediatrician will significantly impact the care of our pediatric population and will reduce travel times and prolonged wait times for care.

(Options for call!! Until it is established just what we will need as far as hospital supportive services I suggest we use the same system that our amazing Ophthalmologists do. They fill out a VCH call-in sheet whenever we need them for an emergency. This will enable us to collect data on how often we actually need call and will be much more attractive to our promising new Pediatrician!)

Sechelt is designated a Level ā€œCā€ Rural Community and the successful candidate may be eligible for rural retention program benefits.
