Role and Facility Information

Reporting to the Medical Director for Primary Care at VCH – Vancouver Community, the Medical Coordinator provides clinical leadership for the Three Bridges Primary Care team in close collaboration with the Primary Care Operations Manager and other members of the clinic leadership team.

Please note: this is a Part Time appointment whereby the majority of your duties (0.4 to 0.6 FTE) will be direct care/patient focused, with a smaller proportion (0.2 FTE) encompassing leadership and operational oversight.

Key responsibilities include:
• Fosters collaborative working relationships that support the clinical practice and ongoing development of primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and VCH staff with an emphasis on providing team based primary care.
• Establishes and maintains effective and regular communication links with the physician & nurse practitioner (MRP) team, to ensure effective engagement, efficient working, and a supportive safe collegial working environment.
• Integrated, strategic & shared decision making in partnership with the Primary Care Operations Manager (clinical-operations dyad) pertaining to local clinic operations.
• Collaborates with internal stakeholders to develop, manage and evaluate clinical programming, ensuring consideration of client needs, service delivery and team relationships within a complex primary care environment.
• Creates an environment of evidence-based clinical practice that fosters professional growth, wellness and development of physicians; encourages participation in quality improvement & research; and supports opportunities for teaching and education of medical students, residents and other VCH colleagues.
• Supports delivery/implementation of relevant clinical guidelines at the local level, and develops an evaluation processes to measure the quality of clinical care rendered with the resources allocated at the respective primary care clinics, for which the medical co-ordinator is responsible.
• Ensures integration of physician practice at a local level by communicating both the strategic priorities of VCH and local operational goals. Similarly, ensures engagement and communication with the MRP team in relation to these priorities.
• Develops and uses conflict resolution pathways with the physician team and ensures early engagement of the Program Medical Director in such situations.
• Implements effective performance management processes for clinic-based physicians.
• Ensures clarification of roles, adherence to accreditation standards and practice standards for safe delivery of high quality primary care.
• In conjunction with the operational manager partner, helps to ensure compliance with legislation, safety standards and VCH policies to provide a healthy and safe environment for patients and staff.
• Works with operational administrative support to coordinate an efficient, effective and comprehensive physician work schedule (3 months in advance) and on-call schedule for the site, in collaboration with other VCH colleague scheduling.
• Co-ordinates the orientation and initial support for new site specific physician locums;
• Works with operational administrative support +/- operations manager to monitor/track the physician budget and contract delivery.
• Represents VCH and advocates for the work of the Primary Care team as a medical leader in both internal & external settings.

A Medical Degree and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia supplemented by clinical leadership experience and a proven track-record in clinical practice. A demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development is required, and be an advocate for a positive work environment and change management.

• Uses sound business acumen to develop and foster collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
• Applies conflict management skills and expertise to persuade and negotiate effective resolution of issues / disputes.
• Inspires a shared vision and aligns performance goals and objectives for medical staff to ensure a match with service delivery strategy, while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness.
• Provides timely and appropriate advice and consultation utilizing effective targeted communication strategies to gain acceptance of recommendations and to facilitate effective decision-making and operations within the context of the medical staff by-laws.
• Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist the Communities of Care and VCH to meet its strategic priorities.
