Role and Facility Information

Vancouver ACT is looking for 1 or 2 psychiatrists to work with two teams that serve community-dwelling clients with complex mental health needs. The target population typically has high levels of comorbidity including substance use disorders, general health problems, and significant risk of aggression. The work is fast paced, exciting, and intense in nature. Collaborative care-planning and problem solving are keys to finding clinical and practical interventions to support these complex clients, many of whom are certified under the Mental Health Act, and maintain them successfully in the community.

Teams: Raincity ACT and Vancouver/VCH ACT Team 5

Staff compliment: Nurses, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Health Care Workers, Peer Specialists, GP, Concurrent Disorders Clinician, Clinical Coordinator, and Vancouver Police ACT liaison officer

Caseload: Approximate caseload of 50 clients in Vancouver across the two teams

Daily Routine: Predominantly outreach client contacts, both independently and with clinical colleagues in a variety of settings including private residences, SROs, shelters, corrections offices, jail, and public areas (i.e. coffee shops).

Available sessions: up to 7 half days (0.7 FTE), days/times negotiable within designated program hours

Program Hours: 7 days/week, outreach takes place from 930am-730pm typically

Physician Responsibilities:

• Enthusiastic collaboration as part of a team, with an emphasis on a transdisciplinary approach.

• Participation in Clinical Team meetings and taking a lead role when required.

• Assessment and management of new referrals to the team as well as providing ongoing care and treatment to existing clients.

• Management of acute psychiatric emergencies, hospital recalls , and emphasis on risk assessment and management.

• Providing expertise in pharmacologic treatments.

• Collaboration with other care providers, including attending meetings with other teams such as housing providers, inpatient and community mental health teams, VPD and judicial courts.

• Preparing reports and providing oral evidence at Mental Health Review Panel Hearings.

• Taking part in teaching sessions and providing clinical guidance and teaching to medical trainees, residents and nursing students.

• On-call duties are optional,
