Role and Facility Information

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), Vancouver Community Mental Health Services is seeking multiple part-time psychiatrists to work in the new, Integrated Downtown East Side (DTES) model of care, starting in November 2016. The positions range from 4 to 6 half-days per week.

In alignment with BC Ministry of Health and VCH priorities, Vancouver Community is realigning the delivery of services in the DTES of Vancouver. Services will be configured to provide personalized, coordinated care to patients with a consistent team of health care providers.

The prevalence of Mental Health issues is significant in the DTES and to meet this need for this in the new model, additional psychiatrists are required. This is an exciting opportunity for motivated psychiatrists to join a team of health care professionals in caring for a complex, marginalized population with significant mental health issues. In addition to providing consultations to patients who receive primary care from the VCH, referrals for consultations will be received from private family practitioners working with DTES patients.

Patients often present with a history of multiple psychiatric hospitalizations; unstable housing and/or relationships; Difficulties with activities of daily living; high risk for co-occuring medical conditions; refractory treatment history; and high risk of causing harm to self or others. Outreach to these patients is a part of the model of care and will be an expectation of the psychiatrists working in the DTES to provide a wrap of services.

Reporting to the Medical Director and Medical Coordinator, the successful candidate provides expertise and consults, acting as a resource to primary care providers in dealing with mental health issues and symptom management with a strong knowledge base in psychopharmacology. Additionally, he/she facilitates continuity of care between hospital and community, liaising with hospital mental health programs. Participation in an on call rota is an expected part of this role.
