Rural Family Practice on Vancouver Island a Perfect Fit for Physician and Young Family

October 21, 2018

When Dr. Carrie Marshall and her family moved to Tofino they quickly learned that dressing for the rain was important. In Hawaii, where Dr. Marshall had lived since 2001, you stay inside until the rain stops. But on the western shores of Vancouver Island, you can’t wait that long. “It rains so much here you just have to embrace it,” she said. She and husband Matt Dyer now make a regular habit of putting the rain cover over the stroller to protect six-month-old Samuel, and decking two-year old Julian out in rain gear before heading off for a hike on the beach.

MLT Left Alberta for New Adventure in BC

October 14, 2018

Karen Hung was not really thinking about moving to BC when she attended a career fair in Calgary. After emigrating from Mauritius seven years ago, she had already lived in Montreal and was studying in Calgary. Even so, she decided to leave her resume with the consultants at the Health Match BC and Fraser Health booths.

When her graduation from the two-year Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) diploma program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary coincided with a hiring freeze, Karen and her husband Steve started looking at other options. “When Fraser Health called about a job, it seemed like a good opportunity to discover another Canadian province,” said Karen. “So, we set out on a new adventure.”

Doctor and Family Find Home in BC

November 29, 2016

Dr. Bbandama Makwati took a very unique route to arrive at the medical clinic in Castlegar, British Columbia (BC): from Zambia, to China, the USA, and South Africa before settling in Castlegar. One might ask, of all the choices available to his family, why did Castlegar top the list?

"My family is the most important thing to me," said Dr. Makwati. "We love nature and we wanted a place that had lots of opportunities for the whole family. We looked at many places but when we thought about Castlegar, my wife and I both had the same feeling: Castlegar feels like home. And for my career, I was looking for a place where I could do both general practice and emergency medicine that had lots of continuing professional development opportunities – Castlegar has it all."

Family Moves from Bangladesh to BC for the Opportunities, and the Snow.

June 10, 2016

Dr. Parveen Ali and her husband may hail from a tropical country, but they love fresh snow. It is a good thing they do, because they live in Fort St. John, British Columbia, which gets an average annual snowfall of 183 centimetres.

The couple moved from Bangladesh in 2000, just after Dr. Ali had finished medical school at Sir Salimullah Medical College in the capital city of Dhaka. Her husband, Nakib, landed a job as a banker in Fort St. John. “It was a land of opportunity, so he wanted to come here,” she explained.
