The vast wilderness area of Northern British Columbia is an unspoiled masterpiece of nature. The lakes are pristine. The land is lush. The air is pure. Comprising more than half the entire province, Northern BC is home to majestic mountains, forested valleys and the world's largest unlogged coastal temperate rainforest.
A sense of adventure waits at virtually every turn in Northern BC. Locals and visitors alike enjoy snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, white-water rafting and freshwater fishing-to name but a few of the many recreational pursuits. And with a First Nations heritage that dates back over 10,000 years, the region is rich with historical and cultural attractions.
The cities and towns of Northern BC provide a unique working environment and a strong sense of community. Forestry, tourism, mining, agriculture, fishing and the oil and gas industry form the economic backbone of this region. Prince George is home to the region's major medical facility as well as the University of Northern British Columbia. Smaller centres include Fort St. John, Dawson Creek, Terrace, Prince Rupert, Smithers, and Vanderhoof.
The region is characterized by a diverse climate with mild conditions in the fall and spring, sun-filled summers and snowy winters. It is accessible by air, rail, road, and sea.
British Columbia's patient-centred health care system is structured to achieve the highest possible levels of efficiency, service co-ordination, and accountability. The Northern BC Region is made up of two health authorities, Northern Health Authority and Provincial Health Services.
